Cthulhu & Lovecraft inspired Virtual Tabletop Role-Playing game Maps

The Cthulhu Mythos is an extremely popular collection of horror short stories by H. P. Lovecraft, and it’s seen a lot of virtual tabletop role-playing games based on the lore. The Chronicles of Cthulhu series of games has already released a number of games set in Lovecraft’s fictional universe, but now you can play with maps inspired from this mythos with your friends anywhere! In this tutorial, we will show you how to create your own virtual tabletop RPG with the help of amazing high quality maps that you can use for any horror game setting.

What is a virtual tabletop RPG?

A virtual tabletop RPG is a type of digital tabletop app that lets you use a computer, tablet or phone to give and/or receive digital gaming experiences over a network. The phrase “virtual tabletop” refers to the computer, while “digital tabletop” refers to any other device. VTT apps let you play games using online connections. They let you host games with other people and play games against other people. You can also record and share your gaming sessions for others to watch and play along with you. VTT apps are a great tool for board game groups as they can be used as a mobile version of a physical tabletop RPG game. With the advancement in technology, playing board games has become more accessible and comfortable. There are many different services today, as Schmeppy, Roll20, Foundry and others.

How to make use of a Cthulhu-themed virtual tabletop RPG map

The map you download is meant to be used with a virtual tabletop RPG. If you don’t have a VTT-map yet, you can buy them via the webshop at DriveThruRPG. The maps are available as JPG:s, in different resolutions, both with and without a grid.

Step 1 – Get the map!

Get the specific map you want for your adventure.

There are many different maps in the above webshop – offices, warehouses, dungeons, basements and even horror lakes and dangerous woods. It all depends on the adventure you are going to play.

Get the map (or maps) you see fit, and then start to add them to your VTT account.

Step 2 – Adventure + Maps = Greatness!

It’s of course important that your adventure is made for the location you are using. Be sure to get a great adventure, and then add the map later.

There are tons of adventures out there – or write your own, inspired by the maps! You can also get map + adventure combos – check out the webshop above and you’ll start getting tons of ideas and content right away.

Step 3 – Add stuff and monsters

All VTT services (Roll20, Foundry, Schmeppy etc) are different, but basically you upload the map as the base, where you are going to play, and then add other assets to this map – as monsters/NPC:s, treasures, obstacles, locked doors, keys – and traps!

Add what you need based on the adventure and the map. Sometimes you want to use the grid-map – sometimes it is better to use the non-gridded map and use the VTT service’s own grid.

Conclusion

And that’s it! You’ve created a Cthulhu-themed virtual tabletop RPG adventure, featuring a fictional city in the Cthulhu Mythos setting with rooms, stairways and doors.

You can now use this amazing location with your friends to host a game, or you could use the same map for other settings or settings that don’t use Lovecraftian lore. The possibilities are endless!
